Sometimes I wish non-Hungarians would refrain from writing in this
newsgroup. This health-care/hospital debate is one instance of the
sometimes.
You crypto-Commies out there:
Yes, health care is nominally free in Hungary:
but, if you want to be fed, you have to bribe the nurse.
Sometimes, if you want a bed, and not lie on a gurney in the hallway, you
have to bribe the administrators.
if you want to eat home-cooked meals, your relatives have to bribe the
porter so he would let them in outside visiting hours.
If you want the doctors to stop by your bed during rounds, you must give
them tips.
If you want painkillers at night, you must tip the night nurse.
if you want to be washed, you must tip two nurses, one to turn you over,
and the other to do the washing.
Hospitals and other health care facilities are run on a feudal basis, the
people with money are cared for by the chief physicians, patients with
less money by the lesser lights, and poor people by the novices. Patient
stealing is frowned upon. A case in point: a young man in the family was
diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on his knee. His parents had money, so
when his doctor went to Boston for 3 months to study, no one in the
hospital would do anything for the 19 year old. By the time the doctor
came back, of course the cancer had spread to his hips and everywhere.
And this happened not in 1978, but 1993.
Autopsy is mandatory for people who die in hospitals, but the stated
cause of death is very general: heart failure, general toxaemia, etc.
Yours,
Tom Sulyok

I saw a list of Internet access providers in Budapest, and promptly lost

Does anyone have such a list, or any information about accessing the
Internet in Budapest ?

Ok: So far everyone has been willing to speak about this and I
appreciate it, however; why would our family (my father and his 5
brothers and 1 sister) not be told why she died....or even when she
died. It was about 36 hours later when they finally were notified that
she had died--she wasn't in her hospital bed for two of their visits
after having simple gallstone removal surgery--otherwise she was quite
healthy. Why the lack of communication/information? How can someone
be dead for nearly two days before anyone notifies the family? Upon
visiting, the deceased's daughter was told by nurses that they didn't
know where she was. This explanation was excepted the first visit but
the next day upon discovering an empty bed again they finally
discovered that she passed away. Is this odd or not? Could it be a
communication problem perhaps?

Your help, ideas, and explanations so far are greatly appreciated.
I'm only diving into this for my own understanding and grieving.

Thanks to Andra1a Kornai for further illumination on personal name origins.
I am expecially impressed by his reference to Boldogko3va1ralja, a tiny
place in the Zemle1ni hegyse1g in northeast Hungary near my familiy's
village. It boasts neat, well-preserved ruins of a medieval va1r [castle/
fortress]--hence the name--that sits atop a rocky outcrop and commands a
magnificent view of the surrounding valley. BTW, even this place name is
apparently a corruption from Bodrog, the name of the river that runs trough
[through] the valley. Either way, it's a beautiful spot, well worth a visit.

Do you have any personal experience with ODIN Kft. ?

Also, what is the current dollar/forint exchange rate ?

Is there any place on the Internet where one can find current exchange
rates ?

Thanks for your help !
