Happy to see Norb back on the list! And since he brought up the state of the
churches in the Kadar regime, here is an interesting item:

On August 9, 1994, Gyorgy Keleti, the new minister of defense, called in the
three newly appointed religious heads of the armed forces, General Gaspar
Ladocsi, Catholic bishop, General Karoly Takaro, Reformed bishop, and Colonel
Robert Frohlich, chief rabbi, for a discussion. He explained to them that in
the future the army will not grant ranks to army chaplains and it will be
also unable to fulfill some of promises made to the churches earlier. The
establishment of a chaplains' offices and their activities will have to be
done much more modestly than originally envisaged.

I understand that the Hungarian army is in bad financial shape but don't you
think that this particular move is not the most fortunate, politically
speaking. Considering that the MSZP is the successor to the MSZMP whose
relationship with the churches was abysmal, I would think that they want to
avoid even the appearance of an anti-religious policies. But obviously, they
are not as sensitive about certain matters as I think they should be. Eva

I hate to admit but *168 ora* didn't not commit any media sins in the last
issue which reached me (August 16) yesterday ;). Therefore, I am afraid, I
must change the topic to economics.

Some time ago (beginning of July) I read an article in a Hungarian paper
about the sanguine expectations of the public and the MSZP concerning the
revitalization of the eastern markets. In the MSZP's election program it was
stated that "within two years the country can regain 10-15 percent of the
lost eastern market." Proponents of the idea suggest trade based on barter.
The article's author was rather skeptical about the success of such
arrangement. I wonder what the readers of this list think. Eva Balogh

Jeliko's draft, Greg's version

I really like it. And I would not try to translate it into Hungarian. After
all, this is an English-language list with an international audience. The
only thing we might want to add is how to sign up for the list. I suggest
that we wait for a few days and if there are no more suggestions, we send the
letter to Mr. Simon and Ms. Forro. After a few days, we might want to send
our first question, the one Andras asked about the media law.

--At one time, during the Soviet occupation of Eastern Europe, there
was a great deal of bartering. It was a kind of underground economy or
black market, if you like, involving Czechoslovakia (as it was then),
Poland, and Hungary. At least it was reported as such in the West. I
might be able to find a reference if you want. Seems to me it involved
electronics from Czechoslovakia, Polish ham, and I forget what from
Hungary--wine or other produce, I think. The thing is, maybe such
an effort might--just might--work on the basis of earlier arrangements.

Incidentally, I picked up a book entitled HUNGARY: A COUNTRY STUDY
at our local Government Book Store. It was edited by someone called
Stephen R. Burant and was done by the Federal Research Division of the
Library of Congress. Unfortunately, the research for the book was
completed in 1989, so it is not current stuff. I thought it might
be of some use as background. Do you know of this series, and, as
an historian, do you give it any credence? Or did I get...well,
taken and didn't even get kissed?

--for what a non-Hungarian's opinion is worth, I think it is a very clear
statement. I especially liked the part that warned them that the
discussions are frank and candid. I'm from the Midwest originally, and
I like the "up front" characteristic displayed by members of this list.
It reminds me of home!

Since I am going on a few days vacation and I don't want to
lose my vote on this issue, here is my two cents:

I support Eva's suggestion that we should send the
message with instruction how to sign up in a few days.
I am willing to accept and support either version of
the message. Let's see wahat the response is going
       to be.

"See" you in a few days,

Why has Romania not come up in the discussion of Hungarian foreign
policy? Would anyone like to comment on the present and future relations
of these two nations? Has there been any significant developments?
