Intro: Stock prices were higher this week in Hungary and the
Czech Republic but lower in Poland. V-o-A's Barry Wood wraps up
the week in the emerging stock markets of post-communist Europe.

Text: The best performing market was Budapest, which gained
nearly two percent. The B-U-X index was up 36 points to 23
hundred 49. Hungarian investors were cheered by prospects of a
new loan from the International Monetary Fund and continuing
optimism about the Hungarian economy.

In Prague, the market was down Thursday but higher Friday. The
P-S-E 50 index gained about one half percent to 484. Prague
Friday began continuous trading in five issues which comprise
over half of the market's capitalization. The market again
reached a 12 month high this week.

In Poland, share prices fell back from their recent rapid gains.
The WIG index was down four percent on the week to 11 thousand
424. The Warsaw market had risen 15 percent in the previous two
weeks.

The smaller markets were mixed with Ljubljana and Bratislava
higher while Sofia was sharply lower. (Signed)

Intro: The mayor of Budapest has expressed concern about growing
rightwing extremism in Hungary after two days of rallies,
organized by ultra-rightists and nationalists, were held in the
capital. As Stefan Bos reports from Budapest, thousands of
people attended the demonstrations.

Text: Thousands of Hungarians demonstrated in Budapest Thursday
and Friday to demand the resignation of socialist prime minister
Gyula Horn and his cabinet.

The demonstrators were upset by the government's economic
austerity program which went into effect last year.

The biggest demonstrations during the two days were organized by
two of Hungary's most rightwing parties. Some protesters wore
uniforms and carried banners with nazi symbols on them.

After the rally was over, the mayor of Budapest, Gabor Demszky,
told V-o-A, he is very disturbed by this trend.

                        // Demszky act //

I don't think that these parties, with all their
totalitarian symbols and their unacceptable items,
should demonstrate openly with their racist slogans.

                         /// End act ///

The mayor says as a result of these extreme rightwing groups
trying to spark unrest, the parliament last week approved a bill
banning any group from displaying fascist symbols or banners
during a public rally. (The bill has not yet gone into
effect). (Signed)
