Driving licence rules
You may drive on British roads, if you hold a full licence in your own
country, and have held that licence for a year. You may drive in Britain
for up to one year from your date of entry on this licence, (on the same
type of vehicle as your licence covers you at home). After that time,
you must obtain a British driving licence.
However, if you leave the country, even for a short period, to go home,
or to another country for a holiday, then from your re-entry date, you
are permitted to drive for another year. (Make sure you get your
passport stamped to show exit and re-entry.)
It is not essential to obtain an International Driving Licence in your
country before you visit, but is much better to do this. This is
important if your driving licence is not obvious, to an English speaker,
as a driving licence; and particularly if it is in a different script -
eg Russian, Japanese, Greek or Arabic. To be able to show an
International Driving Licence may save you much difficulty.
