Intro: The presidents of eight Central European nations meeting
informally Saturday at a Hungarian lake resort condemned the
escalating fighting in Bosnia and gave support to NATO
airstrikes. V-o-A's Barry Wood reports from Keszthely
(kest-hay), Hungary.
Text: The eight presidents appealed to all parties in Bosnia to
stop fighting. They said the re-emergence of barbarism in Europe
at the end of the 20th century can not be tolerated. They
condemned the consistent disregard of U-N resolutions and wanton
attacks on civilian targets.
The presidents were especially strong in their condemnation of
the Bosnian Serbs for their shelling of the town of Tuzla. They
warned against the use of U-N officers as hostages and human
shields.
The unusually strong statement was issued by the presidents of
Germany, Austria, and Italy as well as the presidents of Poland,
the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia.
The statement supported the NATO airstrikes requested by the U-N
command in Bosnia.
The eight presidents are meeting in Hungary to discuss European
integration and the expansion of the European Union. (Signed)
