Intro: Outgoing Hungarian prime minister Peter Boross has warned
that a new government faces many economic problems in the near
future. As Stefan Bos reports from Budapest, Mr. Boross made his
remarks during a farewell speech in parliament.

Text: In his speech to the first session of the newly elected
parliament, Hungarian prime minister Peter Boross said his
government could not solve the economic crisis in the country.

Speaking through an interpreter, Mr. Boross mentioned Hungary's
large foreign debt and the war in the former Yugoslavia as some
of the reasons for the economic problems.

                    // Act of interpreter //

         First, Hungary has a foreign debt of at least 21 billion
         dollars. Another reason is the neighboring East
         European market. There is also the problem of war in the
         Balkans, while the recession in western countries
         continues.

                          // End act //

Mr. Boross announced the end of his center-right government --
which lost the elections in May.

The Hungarian president charged the Socialist Party's nominee for
prime minister, Gyula Horn, with forming a new government by
mid-July.

The socialists are likely to form a coalition with the liberal
free democrats. Together, they control two-thirds of Hungary's
parliament. Anger over economic hardship is seen as a reason for
the rising popularity of the socialists and liberal democrats.
